In an age where it is so easy to be overwhelmed by technology, working life and other commitments, it is important to set achievable health and wellness goals. Whilst these goals are easy to set, they are much harder to stick to! In this article, we are going to look at and discuss three key ways that you can make it easier to stick to your health and wellness goals in the next 12 months and on.

The number one tip for all of us trying to stay strong is to remove as many decisions as possible from your life. There are many highly successful people such as Steve Jobs who firmly believed that your brain is only capable of a finite amount of decisions before it will become tired and unable to perform to its full capacity. Job’s chose to remove the decision of which clothes he would wear each day, famously donning a black turtleneck every day. However, there are other decisions which may be more applicable to your life, such as deciding what you will eat for breakfast every day for the next seven days.

The second tip is to create a stable routine. Many of our health and wellness goals fall to the wayside after our first few days of increased motivation lessen. The human brain loves having a strong routine to follow. In a psychological experiment, people who usually buy popcorn at a cinema were examined. Half of the people were given a box of fresh delicious popcorn, the other was given a box of stale popcorn. The study found that both groups ate the same amount of popcorn regardless of whether it tasted good just out of habit. If you can include your health and wellness goals in your weekly habits, then they will become much easier to achieve.

Finally, make sure your goals are S.M.A.R.T. SMART stands for specific, meaningful and measurable, attainable, realistic and time-bound. The two most important aspects of SMART are that the goal is realistic and easily measurable. If you choose health and wellness goals that are out of reach you may become disenchanted and give up altogether. Also, if you are unable to measure the success of what you are doing you may not notice the results as quickly as you would like and give up. One example of being able to measure your success is if you chose to eat healthily, recording the days and times you enjoyed a bowl of Kuranda Wholefoods muesli or a healthy energy bar instead of eating something bad for you.
